Most definitely companies need to begin the process of listening. And you are correct, it begins to get more and more complicated from a manual basis to keep up with it all.

We'd love your feedback on our Radian6 platform for real-time, automated social media monitoring and analysis if you are interested. Ping me if you are interested in seeing it in action via a demo. Cheers. Social networking is geared towards using the technology benefits of social media (ease of use, interconnectivity, and relationships) to form new bonds between individuals and strengthen old ones. Social networking is based on understanding what types of social media and people create “hubs” of connections, and then leverages those points to create even stronger relationships with other focal points.

Re: Social Media Measurement and Brand Control

Eric- Funny you should mention the 2.0 to 3.0 conversion already happening. I'm amazed how often most adopters get "hung up" on a catch-phrase that has little tangible difference. It will be interesting to see how many marketers hold on to ideas as they go through change.

Steve- You can definitely use profiles on social sites and rating networks to foster some brand protection. I wrote an article about "profile marketing" on that very subject. The strange part about bview is that the company profiles are SEO friendly, but the personal profiles are not? You can find hundreds of profile sites out there that rank on specific industry phrases and terms to help your brand effort out.

Re: Social Media Measurement and Brand Control

what about using recommendation sites like Yelp or newly lauched webstart-up BView (www.bview.co.uk) as a way for businesses to manage their reputations online? These sites enable businesses to take control of their profile and invite customers to rate and review them. The 2 way conversation between business and customers which is possible on BView will no doubt be an effective marketing method for business large and small.

Re: Social Media Measurement and Brand Control

Excellent post. Great information about how to do research on your sites popularity. With web 2.0 starting to be replaced by web 3.0 on people's tounges already, if you don't know how to get social and stay social, you may be dead in the proverbial water.
